Denim Tears Announces Major Expansion, Starting with Tokyo in 2026

Denim Tears is getting ready for its next chapter. The brand, founded by Tremaine Emory in 2019, has confirmed it will expand globally, starting with a Tokyo store set to open in 2026.

The move marks a major shift for the label, which has grown steadily without outside investors. Until now, Denim Tears has only operated through its New York flagship and a concession at Dover Street Market. Even so, the brand reportedly brings in tens of millions in annual revenue and has doubled its sales year over year.

The Tokyo location will be Denim Tears’ first international outpost. After that, more U.S. stores are expected to follow, with Atlanta, Chicago, Houston, Philadelphia, Portland, and Los Angeles all on the radar. The expansion reflects Emory’s goal of staying intentional while meeting demand across a growing customer base.

A key part of Denim Tears’ identity is the cotton wreath, introduced by Emory in 2020. The emblem references the legacy of slavery and has become a visual symbol of the brand’s storytelling around the Black diaspora.

Emory says he welcomes critique of his work but doesn’t plan to change his approach as the brand scales. He’s clear that his vision isn’t meant to be provocative, just honest. Denim Tears remains focused on telling layered, human stories about Black life, using fashion as a medium for cultural conversation.
