A rhinestone-covered sock worn by Michael Jackson during a 1997 concert in France has sold at auction for $8,822, more than double its original estimate. The sock, worn during Jackson’s HIStory World Tour, was recovered by a technician who found it discarded near the singer’s dressing room after a performance in Nîmes.
Despite being yellowed, stained, and missing some of its shine, the sock drew heavy interest from bidders. It was sold at a local auction house in Nîmes after being framed alongside the original backstage pass from the concert.

French auctioneer Aurore Illy called it “an exceptional object,” noting its cultural value for longtime Jackson fans. Jackson famously wore sparkling socks while performing “Billie Jean,” including on the 1997 tour.
This isn’t the first time Jackson memorabilia has sold for a high price. In 2009, one of his gloves from the 1983 moonwalk performance sold for $350,000.
The buyer of the sock hasn’t been identified, and it’s unknown if they plan to wear it—or just put it on display
